Services : Women's Care

CHN’s foundation was in women’s health and though our mission has expanded, we remain committed to serving women’s total health care needs, including STD diagnosis and care, prenatal and gynecological care, as well as contraceptive needs.

Family planning

CHN's roots date back to its formation as the Community Family Planning Council in 1983. Though we have since expanded our mission and changed our name, CHN has never lost its steadfast commitment to family planning issues. At CHN, every man and woman can receive individualized, honest and confidential advice on birth control. Whether a client wants to learn about contraception or abstinence, they will receive quality medical care and counseling. Our Teens PACT program is tailored to the needs of adolescents.

Prenatal Care

Prenatal Care is provided under the NY State Prenatal Care Assistance Program (PCAP) guidelines. CHN physicians and certified nurse midwives provide prenatal care at all CHN centers and arrange for patients to visit the hospital they have chosen for their delivery beforehand. Care is coordinated with the providers at the hospitals.

CHN is piloting a new group prenatal care model, “Centering” prenatal care.

The Centering Pregnancy Program "alters routine prenatal care by bringing women out of exam rooms and into groups for their care," as the Centering Pregnancy and Parenting Association explains. During the program, "Women have their initial intake into their obstetric care in the usual manner with history and physical examination occurring within the office/clinic space. Then they are invited to join with 8-12 other women/couples/teens with similar due dates in meeting together regularly during their pregnancy. The groups form between 12 and 16 weeks of pregnancy and continue through the early postpartum period meeting every month for the first four months and then bi-weekly." Gynecological Care

In addition to regular gynecological exams, CHN performs colposcopies. Colposcopy is the examination of a woman’s cervix (which is the lowest part of the womb) by the use of a special microscope. You may need this examination because there is some evidence or suspicion of a problem related to the lower part of your uterus. There may have been report of abnormal finding from your pap smear, or there may be some evidence of infection or inflammation when you had your exam. The exam is done in the same way as a regular gynecological exam. The colposcopy does not touch your body. The practitioner may take a tiny piece of tissue (biopsy) to be examined. If this is necessary, you will be advised prior to the biopsy and you may feel a small pinch. There may be a small amount of bleeding after the biopsy, but in most cases this stops soon after the procedure.

Our philosophy is to provide our patients with as much information as possible so that they can participate in their health care decisions. Our medical providers take the time to answer your questions. The Health Education department has a full range of materials, workshops and educators to work with our patients, either in small groups, or one-on-one as needed.
